Reading

August and September

First graders are reviewing on what good reader's do when they read a story. We have discussed
1. Read the title.
2. Do a picture walk.
3. Point to the words as you read them.

We are also discussing the 3 ways to read a story.
1. Look at the pictures.
2. Read the words.
3. Retell the story in your own words.

During Reader's Workshop students will be learning about the classroom library and how to pick a "Just Right" book. This process is explained after reading Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Too Hard (Papa Bear Book)- No pictures, Don't know any of the words on the first page, words are really small, not interesting to read.

Too Easy (Mama Bear Book)- Some pictures, know all the words on the first page, not enough words on a page ( phrases or easy sentences), not interesting to read.

Just Right- (Baby Bear Book)- Pictures to help you figure of the words, 1-2 sentences on the page, know 3-4 words on the first page, the book IS interesting to read.

After creating the chart, students will fill their book baskets up with "Just Right" books and "Just for Fun" books.
